Superwinch s2500 is it to wimpish for an SJ

I have been given a Superwinch s2500 for free, I know its not really man enough on paper, but would it be of any use if I did get stuck? Or am I just giving myself a false sence of security if I was to fit it?

Gives me a good excuse to make a nice winch bumper.

Point less waste of time.

Take a read here. I calculated the maths using the same calulations used by REME for all recovery (Landrovers to challengers)

Thanks, that's confirmed what I had thought. Ah well may as well stick it on eBay and find myself a more suitable winch.

6500lbs minimum. Anything over 9000lbs is just extra dead weight.

I could bash on all day about the safe correct way to do recovery and the use of slings and strops and apex and rope care.

I wouldn't buy one that rating but I wouldn't say it's completely pointless if its free. It'll get you out if you aren't that stuck if you double it up  I've used a 4000lbs hand winch to get my SJ out loads of times  9/10 times when stuck green laning it's only a little pull that's needed anyway.

But the minimum I would fit on an SJ would be 6000lbs, it'll be fine for 98% of occasions and if it struggles you can always double it up.

9000lbs is what most people recommend but it's not really needed unless you are competing in my opinion.

some of the winch challenge boys use that size for rear suck down winches.

Ha Ha I'm ex REME, and reccy mech maths isn't the greatest, Every recovery required a 2:1 (doubled up) minimum, even if they were pulling a land rover out with a challenger.

Could see a use for a small winch like that on the rear, on the usual assumption its easier to be pulled out the way you went in!!

All depends what machine you were using to recover the landrover. They are so light they didn't even pull the foden winch rope taught.
