A lot nowadays as they are getting on a bit, and to find one modded, who says that whom did it did it properly.
Why did you take back the one you won, did you pay a good old price and expect it to be top dollar machine? was it not an easy fix?

I returned it because on the test drive it was fine....when I went to pick it up it went for half a mile and crunched to a stop..... I would at least expect to have got the 40 miles home ! and the guys attitude was crap so I went for a refund........... I put £30.00 fuel in it and he would not refund me plus I spent £60.00 on transport.....If I sold a car to someone and it did 500 yards I would have offered the money back paid for the petrol and driven him home....apologising all the way, I guess that's the difference between I good person and a not good person !.......

All depends why it broke down.
On one hand your lucky he gave you a refund. Most private sales are no warranty, refunds or returns.
What was the spec / condition and how much did you pay if you don't mind.

swb 1600 vitara engine with SU carb....jimny power steering range rover seats and a boot full of spares...body was a poor with rust on all arches cracked windscreen 1 month MOT no tax
£900
I was happy with it until it made a real nasty crunching noise and stopped so my enjoyment was around 10 minutes......wasted day spent £100 on nothing
will keep looking

Most of the pre-modded ones that come up have been built to a reasonable standard once upon a time but then been passed through a load of others who buy them and cover them in monster energy stickers, don't have a clue what they are doing and generally bodge everything then pass it on to someone else who does more of the same.
The best way is to either build yourself or just be very vigilant when searching and viewing.

£400 on a SJ is fine if you have the resources to renovate, repair and modify.....I don't have that....I have a single garage and very little time....wife kids job mortgage so I need a finished SJ not one that needs load of work....the one I bought drove fine on the test drive ....it was a little scruffy but hey all I need it for is to drive green lanes and off road when I have a few spare moments it dose not need to be show room... I found a nice one yesterday and have done a deal @£1750.00....its MOT'd and taxed and needs nothing........so as long as the current owner dose not welch on the deal I might get to meet some of you all on a run.
regards
