hi folks,
having just aquired a 2005 grand vitara that i find great i now have an issue id like some advice on if possible? when i select 4h or 4l the 4wd light starts flashing on the dash...some times it stays on longer than others but never stays lit. The car drives ok but not sure if the 4wd is engaged however if i drive on full lock with 4wd engaged the car lurches as tho jumping in /out of drive? i noticed this whilst trying to turn the car round? ps i dont have a handbook but sure im engaging 4wd properly.

Thanks Andy :er:

Hi Andy
Welcome to the club
First thing I will say is don't drive it in 4wd on the tarmac as that will happen or something will break.

The first thing to do as regards the 4wd light is to check the hoses that go to the front axle, any air leaks can cause it to come out of 4wd.

Thanks for the advice when you say don't drive like that on Tarmac sorry to
be dim but thought it would be a good vehicle for winter on non gritted roads etc? Does that mean its no good for said purpose? At what point conditions is it safe to use? Sorry to appear confused but unsure of how else to check all is ok? Thanks all help is gratefully appreciated

As it doesn't have a centre differential only use 4wd in slippery conditions.
Mud - snow - gravel

When it,s just a bit icy I would only put it in 4wd if you cannot pull away in 2wd.
Basically the wheels need to be able to slip to stop transmission wind-up.

I'm sure it will be great in the crappy weather if you have some reasonable tyres on it.
When there is just a little snow on the ground (tarmac) 4wd will be fine.
