Re: HELP!!!!!! Oil filter gasket blown!!!
The pcv has a spring loaded ball valve inside so if it rattles its probably broken

Have you run it yet with the filler cap loosened off?
Might be worth a compression test also to see if there is pressure leaking past the rings.

I'm gonna order a new one and replace it, if it fixes great if not then I know for sure that's not it. It's only £30 loltwiss wrote:The pcv has a spring loaded ball valve inside so if it rattles its probably broken
it's a Mann filter and is brand new, that was my first thought when it originally blew.Rhinoman wrote:What make filter is it? it could be just a duff filter.
yep I've run it with the filler cap off and also with various parts of the pcv and pipework off.it runs badger rough with the pcv value off and smoothes out with it on, I've also had the rocker cover off and blown through the pipework that connects to the pcv just for good measure. Unfortunately I don't have the kit to do a compression test. And when it does run the exhaust is clear with no blue smoke so I don't think the rings have gone. Apart from this the engine is surprisingly strong for its ahe and mileage have always been impressed with it.Ladaman wrote:Have you run it yet with the filler cap loosened off?

I've had it up to temp today , I admit I started it with low oil but have topped it up since and it appears that all is well, so as we all know things don't just fix themselves I'm gonna let it go cold again and try again with a higher oil level to see if that makes a difference.
Thanks agsin for all the input hopefully we can start eliminating some possible causes soon. I can't get a pcv until Tuesday so if we can think of anything else that might be causing it it I can look into it.

Re: HELP!!!!!! Oil filter gasket blown!!!
Did anything blow out when you had the filler cap off? Or the pipework off?
I used to have a G13 engine that ran nicely but blew smoke - enough to (literally) hide a single decker bus.
Stripping it down, I found all the oil ways were bunged up so badly that I don't know how oil was getting to the head (or indeed IF it was). Even after a complete rebuild, I ended up binning that engine in favour of a low mileage one that runs sweeeeet, but the point is that we need to narrow down where the pressure is building up and where it's releasing.
So did you blow anything with the cap off? With the pipework off? Might be worth deliberately trying to blow the seal with the pipework off.
I have a feeling your new pcv valve will sort it though...

, either with or without the filler cap or the pcv fitted. The only thing that has gone is the oil filter gasket on both the old filter and the new and no smoke of any discription. The rocker cover is as clean as a 100.000 mile rocker can be and all the lines to the pcv that I can get to were no more gunked up then you'd expect them to be . The rockers and value springs were sat in a nice pool of oil so for the most part the oil is flowing were its needed.
I'm gonna give it another hour and then start it from cold with a normal oil level in it and see if I can get a leak with that! It's costing me a fortune in oil!!!

Re: HELP!!!!!! Oil filter gasket blown!!!
Well fellas the new pcv I'd on and the motor has never run better! The pcv must have been on its way out for a while as the idle doesn't start at the mental 2000 rpm any more and sits at a delightful 1500 on start up. For the £32 for a new pcv I'd recommend changing it just out of course if it hasn't been done.
