Personally, I would engage both, drive it 100 yards with the hubs locked but in 2wd, the park up and get one wheel up in the air.

If you can spin the tyre, then one or both hubs is not working.

With both front wheels on the floor, you should not be able to turn the front prop shaft by hand.
With either hub (or both) unlocked the prop will spin round.

Go off roading with them locked, if a landy can go places you can't, they're not working. Its not an exact science, but its pretty damned close.

I was told, put car in 4x4 but gearbox in neutral,
jack front up so both wheels are of the ground.
lock hubs.
turn one wheel and the other wheel should rotate also.
Mine didn't :(
One of the hubs was jammed so it was taken apart and cleaned now it works :)
