Well, one of the engines I was considering is the Toyota 1.4 diesel, because they're under 100kg yet put out 120ft/lb and 70hp. I have a Yaris with the same engine, but the Mk2 (140ft/lb/90hp) and it's brilliant for torque, although it does have some turbo lag meaning it's got most of it's torque above 2500, and loses useable power above 4500rpm (it just runs out of puff between there and the redline).
Thing is though, below 2500rpm it might not be producing max torque, but there's still loads of it. It's just it kicks you in the pants at 2500+, whereas below that it just pulls in a very civil manner.
I know it'd cope well with the SJ, as I've towed the SJ with the Yaris several times and I can still get off the lights pulling the SJ faster than most other cars!
It's just an engine I know, and I like how it does things. It's good if you want to hoon it, it's good if you fancy being lazy and going everywhere at 1000rpm too.
And you can pick up mk1's for a few hundred quid...
Yeah, I'm going to keep the SJ for many, many moons. I don't plan on ever selling her! Bit by bit I'm upgrading just about everything, I want her to be as close to mechanically perfect as possible.

Diesel is awesome, I know you and Dan are going to punch me in the manberries at some point for saying that, but I love my diesel Yaris. Just love the way it drives. I never need to take it out of 5th unless I go under 30mph, or if I want to hoon it. Just so much low end torque. Suits my driving style so well!
The honest truth is though, it's probably a massive pipe dream, hence the 1.6. Although I'm seriously considering an M series swap ala Ladaman instead, should be more powerful and less juicy.
Even though I already have all the bits for the G swap (apart from a 1.3 flywheel)...
I almost have all the parts I need to bolt everything together outside the car, then drop everything in at once. If I get a 1.3 flywheel, then make the engine mounts, it'll be:
Pull the 1.3 engine and gearbox
Drop in the 1.6 engine and gearbox
Swap the intake manifold and SU from the 1.3 to the 1.6
Tune it
So lets face it, the 1.6 swap is actually the most likely thing. If I was fully healthy, I'd probably have done it already. I just *hate* the extra tax thing - all that dosh for 40cc!!!

Vits and older GV's don't have a centre diff, in 4x4 mode the front and rear axles are locked together 1:1. When you corner, one axle will need to move slightly further than the other.
Without a centre diff, you'll find that your transmission will try to force the rear to move the same distance as the front axle, and it cant. This can cause transmission windup and damage your transmission. On tarmac you should be in 2wd only.
