knocking from sj transfer box

Hi everyone, i recently got given a sj410 1984 4-speed soft top (pics on new members) after my brother purchased a land rover. It didn't run and had sat in the woods under cover for a couple years. After finally getting it going i drove down my drive and changed in to second gear, as i did this i felt a small knock against the floor.

I was just wondering if any of you knew what could be the problem?

Another thing i found was that the distance between gears at the gear shifter is around 1ft in difference. Does anyone know why this might be? just curious. I'll probably swap the engine and gear box out for a 1.3 sj or a 1.6 vit.

Possible failed bushes on the transfer box or gear box. They perish with age. Just crawl under and try rocking the transfer box by hand.

Gearbox has a rubber bracket at the back end, give it a wobble ti see if its failed.

Is the gear lever sloppy and quite hard to tell if its in gear or not?

Could be the gear stick bushes or the bolt that aligns the gear lever.

Had a look today and found that the transfer box mount had a sheared bolt.

Good find! They're supposed to break when they have too much load going through them, but more often than not they just degrade with age, you can get uprated ones if your going to put low ratios in the t box or if your going to give it some hammer off road, I bought some KAP Suzuki uprated mounts for mine, but some people use landrover engine?/gearbox? Mounts with a nut and bolts and washers through them, and that is fine but you don't have the fuseable 'factor' and it may put stress on the chassis/mount, I once saw (on difflock - a few years ago) where the solid mount had started to tear the t box mounting arm from the chassis because solid mounts had been used.

Llama 4x4 do replacement upgrades. Bolt through or the rubber kind.

I would buy new genuine mounts. They will last a very long time, I bet some tbox mounts on sjs are 30years old now so it's not surprising that they fail.

I think they just perished over time as it's all stock.

Don't go for the bolt through mounts, instead of breaking when too much force is put through them, they will just transfer the stress directly into the chassis mounts

Just out of curiosity, has anyone popped a mount like that?

I have spare standard t-case bushings in my glovebox in case I pop one. They were already in the wee beastie when I bought it all those years ago, and they're still sitting there (it was a while before I realised what they were).

So I'm not really that bothered about upgraded bolt-through bushings, because popping a standard one would mean 10 minutes under the truck and then I'm off again.

Just curious, really.
