SJ413 MPG

Hi all,

So I've had my SJ just over a week now.

Last weekend I did approx. 120 miles (added correction for oversized tyres by comparing with sat nav) so this is fairly accurate, and used 25 litres of fuel. Works out around 22 MPG I believe!

This was all with the free wheeling hubs locked and about 15 miles of greenlining/heavy offroad mixed in. Running original 1.324 with Aisin carb. Tyres are 215/75/15 Bronco Diamond backs

Will try next tank with fwh set to free for all road driving and see what difference is!

I'm not too bothered by 22 mpg as it's not my daily driver, but I was expecting closer to 30!

What do other people get?

With 31" all terrains, the 1.3 and a rock lobster i got 32mpg on motorway runs.

Now on 33" MTs, rock lobster, 4.3 R&Ps and a 1.6 on an SU carb, high teens to low 20s seem to be my average.

My old 413 on 31" used to do about 26mpg. My Vit on 30" does about the same. Oddly my LJ on 33" does 35+mpg.

Go figure.

I average around 20mpg if i'm lucky but mine is far from standard

I think 25-28mpg is the norm if it's healthy and tuned well.

I am getting high 20s out of my V6 Vitara LWB but mine is a bog standard motor,the SJ is about as aero dynamic as a flying wardrobe and with just a 1.3 lump in it,then add things like heavy winches and alot of other bits of non standard kit then you 'wont' get a green award like a Prius for fuel economy.

When i bought my V6 Vitara alot of folks said i would need a petrol tanker running behind it,but once you get upto speed and then throttle back on the motorway it can go over 30mpg,but if you use it on the traffic light grand prix as we occasionally do a few folks in hot hatches get a little suprise but at the expense of my old fuel gauge taking a hit lol.

35mpg out of mine, on 31" mud tyres. I think a really well tuned SJ with gearing that suits the road will get 30+ with a carb upgrade (most, if not all of the people saying they get 30+ are running a HIF44 SU carb).

I was probably getting closer to 25 before I got out the colourtune kit. My recommendation is - get a rockwatt SU intake manifold upgrade and a HIF44 carb, and tune it properly. I would love to suggest EFI, but honestly I don't think it buys you much over an SU - certainly not enough to make the work fitting it worthwhile!

I'm just not sure i can believe 35mpg out of an sj or anything with a carb'd G series tbh maybe 30mpg on motorway runs but not every day driving.

Swift gtis with injection, less weight, better aerodynamics and smaller tyres only average mid 30s and injected vits are usually 30ish, no way a carb can be as economical as injection.

Someone who gets 35mpg, please video yourself putting in 4.5 litres from empty and then driving 35 miles

My 1.3 sammy with a Weber and I get around 22mpg, I do think I'm running rich though, I think it's jetted wrong and still haven't got around to sorting it,

Me and Donkeychomp went laning, we filled up before we left, we filled up when we were done, and we did the math. A combo of A roads, B roads, some m-way and some lanes, and I got 35mpg.

Alex was there, he can vouch. He did the math with me. I will admit that we might have done the math wrong, but I don't *think* we did. I've checked the mpg's this way before, and came up with 35 each time.

Maybe colourtune is worth the few extra mpg? Or maybe it's just because I drive like a granny when I'm not mudplugging (where I drive like a raving loon)...?

I tend to get high MPG's in any vehicle I drive. I once got 90mpg out of a London to Horsham A-road run in the Yaris (not a fan of the M23), and that's rated for 60mpg.
