Use of axle stands

Post by Eltoon » Sat Mar 11, 2017 1:33 pm

Where's the best place to put the stands when wanting to lift both sides of an SJ? Not the axles I'm guessing as the diff is in the way...? Ta

I often fit them under the spring plates, but here's the workshop manual info.
I also shove the wheels under as well or a selection of blocks I have, just in case.
Be careful

If I'm working on an axle (have to pull it off or whatever) then I put axle stands under the chassis. Just ahead of the spring perches on the rear, just behind them on the front. If I'm not taking axles off, then generally I put the axle stands under the axles.

I prefer putting them under the axles if at all possible because the point behind the front spring perches is a long way back, and the vehicle doesn't seem as stable with the stands there as it does when they are under the axles themselves.

I have, in the past, used my friend's super huge axle stands (built for a lifted Hilux on 39" tyres) under the chassis rails at the front as well as stands behind the front axle perches. Just, y'know, for safety purposes.

Cheers. I ended up with them on the axles, it does seem like a more stable place. Reinforced with some older weaker axle stands strategically placed and the jack just making contact on the diff. Still nervous under it though! Wish I'd bough a jack with a higher lift too, 3 or 4 more inches would have been better. That'll have to wait though.

I've got a collection of blocks of wood and concrete bricks for extra jacking height lol

I just drive mine up onto some chunks of rail sleeper stacked on top of each other.
