So being new to the SJ410 can somebody please tell me the do's and dont's with the four wheel drive system?
I believe there is no diff in the transfer box to vary the speed between the front the rear so I shouldn't use the four wheel drive for general road use. Is this right?

Yeah, there's no centre differential on the SJ drivetrain. This means you can get 'wind-up' in the T-box which can, as far as I know, cause the T-box to tear itself apart.
NEVER use the 4WD on tarmac unless, for example, you can't get up a hill because of snow/ice, and then as soon as you're out of trouble disengage it again. Only use 4WD when there's a loss of traction, so that you don't build up the torsion in the T-box.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

As Ed says just don't use 4wd on tarmac, only engage 4wd on low traction surfaces like, gravel, mud, grass, ice and snow etc. otherwise you'll get transmission wind up. If do ever get transmission wind up and cant get back into 2wd just reverse for a few meters to unwind the transmission

Snow will be a good test for your 4wd system

(maybe have a laugh at the stuck people, it's funny waiting til they're unstuck and then driving over what they got stuck on
