Coil thingy...

Hey guys. My mate, Mad Lada Tony, is upgrading from a Lada Niva to a 410.

There's a weird thing on his coil, it gets very hot - bypassing it doesn't seem to make any difference, but does anyone know what it is?

A ballast resistor? A noise suppressor? Anyone know what it actually is???

Its a ballast resistor, has he definitely got the right one for a 410, the 413 ones are a different value I believe. Also they only work with a coil design for one, so if the coil has been replaced it may not need it, or may need a different one.

Roger that. I'm told it works without it, and there's a good chance that the coil is actually from a Lada Niva. He's got a few of those, and he did say something about pulling the coil out and trying another one.

The ballast resistor is needed, they do get hot, That’s why they have a ceramic coating.

It is needed to drop the voltage to 9v for the coil as it’s a 9v coil. it’s only bypassed briefly during starting if wired correctly.

Bypassing it permanently will cook the coil, points and condenser.

You MUST run a 9v coil with ballast resistor when running a dizzy with points.

I don't know anything about points, but he did confirm that this machine has points.

I would just swap the lot to a 413 dizzy and coil, do away with the points all together.

Sounds like a good plan, Tim. Do you know if a 413 dizzy is swappable? Google isn't being much help at the moment...

If the coil has been changed it needs to have been changed to a 9v unit and use the ballast resistor. a 12v coil will fry points.

You can swap in the 413 dizzy and a 413 coil, problem is theres no suitable point to fit a vacuum port on the carb for the vacuum advance.
