I think the big bumpers came out in 1990. I had a 16v which was a awesome car, but i think the 8v is the more popular choise. Its not as fast but has a realy torquey engine. I think you will be shocked how well it handles for a front wheel drive, and they tend to tripod when you corner at speed

One simple mod that is worth doing is getting a weighted gear linkage from a mk3 golf. Take about 2 minutes to put on and will make the gear change feel much smoother
