410.. what lift/tyres?

Post by nathan.stevens » Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:33 pm

right, i've just got my second SJ, it's an '87 410 tin top in matt black, battered all over but luckily no rust.
the engine blew up on the way home from picking it up :argh: so i've got another 410 engine to go in... all running gear etc is standard and i was wondering what's the best/most cost-effective combination of lift and tyre sizes (bearing in mind it's also my daily so needs to be driveable)

any help would be much appreciated!

for the lift wise i would say a 2 inch and possible a virtual lift maybe

for tyre wise dont get grizzy bears because there amazing on the sticky stuff   , but horrible on the road , when i take my sj out on the road i wear ear defenders because of how loud there are

i was thinking either add a lead or cheap and nasty shackles for the time being?
as for tyres, think i might go for kumho kl71's, they're what i had before and were brilliant on and off road, but what size would be best with a 2" lift?

tbh i wouldnt go for the shackle options because they my look allright in the short run , but they nacker you springs up giving you 'flat springs', and that aint good
add a leaf is alot better ;)

i believe twiss uses them tyres so wait for his opinion ;)

With a 410 on stock gearing you don't really want to go over 30" and I would save up the extra for a nice set of 2" lift springs for the best results. Then just get some longer shocks and brakelines and you'll have a nice driving sj that will go more places than you might think.

I ran my 410 as a daily like that but with 31s for 2 years and it was brilliant fun.

Or there is the slightly cheaper option of fitting your rear springs up front and then either getting some 2" lift springs or Bedford rascal springs on the rear.

thanks for the advice? will the rascal springs bolt straight on, or is there cutting and welding involved?
my grandad has a bedford rascal, may have to "borrow" his springs for a while haha

215/75 15 muds, bit of trimmin on the front bumper, maybe some off set wheels, or decent spacers, and should be all you would need

My friend had his old 410 with the 7" white 8 spoke, and Diamond backs (215/80/15's) ran on standard suspension, got good flex, worked well off road, and the tyre size wasn't so bad that it killed the on road performance

or. save up and buy some springs, one of my moto's now i am older, is, do it once, do it right or else you will have to do it all over again

with regards to shackles, although i hate them, if you extend the bump stops, shackles should not kill the springs, the springs only die as they bend beyond flat, my badly done SPOA is testerment to that, no bump stops at all, and springs are S shaped.
