I have the remains of a Vitara - what should I keep for SJ

Post by diamond hell » Fri Mar 02, 2012 10:36 pm

A few months ago I was given what remains of a Vitara. It's been used as an off road toy, so most of it's been removed, but it still stops starts and goes (although it only seems to run for about 10 minutes).

What should I keep from it to use on my trialer, when I scrap it?

Cheers!

Yes I see that I should keep what I want, but the question is - of the drivetrain, what should I keep? Are the diffs good/better? Should I keep the gearbox? Obviously I'm going to hang on to the engine, but the rest of the Vitara bits are a complete unknown to me.

Is It a lwb? If it is it has bigger drum brakes on the rear that slot straight on to an sj rear axle, as for the diffs the front vit one can be used for a vit ring & pinion mod or it can be slotted straight into an SJ axle. If you fit a vit diff you get a better ratio but its not as strong, if you use the diff for a ring & pinion swap you build the sj diff with some vit components and get the best of both worlds.

It's only a SWB one - early too, it's running on a carb.

Is it really just the engine that's worth keeping?

If your SJ hasn't got a brake servo then the vit one fits.

Front calipers are also a good upgrade on the SJ.

If you ever want to go twin tboxes then keep the gearbox and transferbox
