There's about 5mm play..absolute maximum in one direction on this UJ. Gearbox when it was altogther was shaking about when in 3rd gear and the truck jacked up with wheels clear off the ground.
With this UJ off and transfer box obviously, no apparant movement from the gearbox..do you think my maximum 5mm play, 4mm more likely, is enough to shake the whole lot about??

As advised before, I shall look at all rubber mounts too.
Spoke to sandr via e mail, no probs when they first built it, and I guess quite genuinely that it's just the change over time that's bringing this on.
I was all in a rush to try to sort this all out, wrongly, so I do accept it's a process of elimination till I get it right with help from a mate...and indeed all folks here who I really do appreciate the input from.

Thanks so far guys, any other ideas greatly appreciated too
Ta,
Titch

mmm..
I guess my set up is different to a standard SJ then??

The picture I put on the post goes to the inside of the back of the box on it's splines, as on the bottom left of your picture Darrell, then the flat plate bolts directly to the top of the transfer box..I suppose yes, this has made a 'straight' join..then it's a prop off the bottom front of the TB goes to front axle and same behind almost to rear axle...I'm confused now a bit...tell me if I'm not making sense..I did look at all those funny little yellow men earlier..I thought you could use the 'slap' one on me if I'm being foggy...
Your picture is exactly what I have, without the shaft..???maybe home made yes, but I'm advised that it caused no issues with sandr..and I have total faith in what's said, they've been really helpful with what can be remembered, really helpful & genuine at that!!

Tell me what I'm not saying..and if I should??? now, where do I find them funny 'little yellow men'..?? :slap:

I will admit to being confused by a propshaft with only one UJ. This to me would work if the shafts are on a different angle to each other but in-line, as two Uj's would be needed to cater for mis-alignment.
That's a lot of play for a UJ so it needs replacing anyway and it could well be the reason for the vibrations.

The Uj's on this prop are the same size so it would have been easy too assemble it as yours is

I think you are right Darrell, I suppose any play is too much, and when I've ran it up with truck in third gear, obviously no shafts fitted, before the oil spurted out, there's no 'shake' on the back end of the box..hope i haven't wasted anyone's time here..I'll get the UJ replaced and try it,..wouldn't it be good if this was the culprit..especially as you say that it does need to be spot on..

Awaiting the UJ tomorrow hopefully, then, time permitting, I'll try it out.
Just a bit busy work/shows this next couple of weeks...

As long as the SJ tbox input and the gearbox output are perfectly aligned and parallel I would imagine the UJ would have a good service life. You will need to make sure the engine, gearbox and tbox mounts are all good though. If they are allowing a lot of movement it will reduce the life of the UJ.
