great you do the tappets twice just to make sure.
fire the bugger up and clatter clatter , if it aint the tappets what the hell is it???.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

in a word , NO.
i do not have anything that would do that as im a bit of a luddite when it comes to tech.
the sound seems to be a bit camie.
whats the common problem of these engines suffering from oil starvation on the top end i heard.
my engine is as clean as a whistle in side (free oil, changed every 3K) an was re build about 30K ago.
think it could be either the cam on its way or the followers.

 fair enough

The oil starvation issue is usually caused by someone fitting the headgasket on the wrong way around, would have probably seized a long time ago if that was the case.

Could be a worn cam or followers? I have a few spare 410 heads in the workshop, most are unknown condition though as I bought a job lot off someone last year.

Where in the country are you?

I'm talking from memory as I don't have my sj410 to refer to (sold it) but I completely rebuilt my engine also and it was only in the nick of time that I realised that the two oil feed tubes which lubricate the cam have to be orientated so that they are the correct way round. If these are not correctly positioned you lose a lot of oil pressure and the oil is not fed on to the cam lobes - might be worth a look. I had to have a new cam but it was possibly on its way out anyway - yes it was noisy but the biggest clue was that I had to keep adjusting the tappets and of course once the lobe hardened tips have worn they then wear very quickly thus requiring doing the tappets again.
