The cat wouldn't last long without any fuelling control on the carb. Check for air leaks around the intake and give it a good service, it could just be that the carb or the timing aren't set up right, does the vacuum advance work properly?

ive got a new intake gasket on the way, new plugs n leads gonna give it a good old service, how do i check if the vaccum advance is working?

You need a timing light. You need to check that the advance is working and you will need to disconnect the vacuum pipe and check the timing without it at idle.
