Chemical dip n' strip
Anyone ever had this done?
I phoned a few shot / grit / sand blast places and none recommend it for car panels. Everyone said even the gentlest form would destroy the panels. They all advised a chemical dip. Including one firm who do vehicle restoration projects.
Just wondered if anyone had had this done on anything?

Re: Chemical dip n' strip
Just get it blasted, dipping is £1250 plus for a sj body shell, surface productions near Birmingham quoted me that.
Blasting was £250......
Pay more and they can take more time not to distort panels, my dad has anus body shells done and his bloke has never distorted a panel, he even does e type jag bonnets for people !!
Who ever told you blasting isn't for car panels is taking out of there arse. Sorry to be frank. But all major restoration projects have blasting work carried out. And it's an sj !! Blasting is the way to go mate

Re: Chemical dip n' strip
A mate of mine had his Ford Pop panels blasted, not sure what with, sand, grit, nut shells or what.
It does a good job on car panels, but might shock you on the level of corrosion that was lurking as it will remove it all and possibly scrap a panel off. At least you really know what the metal is like though.

At the end of the day it depends on your budget and who does it. Over the years I have seen some proper shit jobs were the beads hit the metal so hard it dents it all up etc. But then on the otherside I have seen some really good jobs done with shot blasting.

I've seen plenty of bad blasting jobs on cars where panels have been warped. It does depend what they use for the blasting and how they fast they do it.

Re: Chemical dip n' strip
If you get it dipped make sure it's fully stripped into all 3 parts (if you can get the screws out) otherwise it's going to strip the paint out in between the joins and then those sections will not get repainted and rust out pretty quick.
I'm not really sure that it's worth the expense though if its going on an off roader, with a bit of elbow grease you'll be able to remove any small amounts of rust and repaint them anyway. Last thing you would want is to spend loads getting it dipped and painted nicely then dent/scratch the hell out of it off roading. I can see the point if it was for a restoration though.

I was going to suggest just using elbow grease but it seemed a bit hypocritical looking at the state of mine!!!ScottieJ wrote: I'm not really sure that it's worth the expense though if its going on an off roader, with a bit of elbow grease you'll be able to remove any small amounts of rust and repaint them anyway. Your SJ (like mine) is a good example of why not to spend much money doing the bodyworktwiss wrote:I was going to suggest just using elbow grease but it seemed a bit hypocritical looking at the state of mine!!!ScottieJ wrote: I'm not really sure that it's worth the expense though if its going on an off roader, with a bit of elbow grease you'll be able to remove any small amounts of rust and repaint them anyway. Re: Chemical dip n' strip
To be fair though my front panel is in quite good condition! I think it's the only one without a considerable dent on it!!!
