I also think that the clutch is on it's last legs - it's slipping a *lot*...

At a rough guess i'd say something it wonky.

Is it the disc or the hub? How good are the bearings / shafts?

Tried different (old/worn, but known to be true) discs, same problem.

I took the disc off and the backing plate I made out of the old drum is doing the same dance, although obviously less noticeably. The shaft itself seems to run true, the backing plate wobbles in relation to the shaft, but that's by eye - I can't truly tell.

I think I need new backing plates. I hope that's all it is...

Yes. That's the side that is worst.

I have some old drums, what I think I'll do is take off the calipers, the backing plates, and the caliper mounts (if they get in the way) and bolt the dums on, if the drums run true, it's the backing plates.

If not, then it's bearings, warped axle housing, or god knows what.

I may be going to the hilux meet in the Yaris too!

At least it's a Toyota...

I find it very hard to believe it will be the backing plate warped. I'm guessing its either the shaft or axle casing.

Those drums are pretty thick steel and no one else has managed to warp one when cutting out the centres for disc carriers.

Has it been used since you modded and welded the axle casing?

Is it just moving up and down as in its off centre or in and out as well like the disc isn't on square? Deffo 100% no play in the wheel bearing? (Always best to have the wheel fitted to check for more leverage) Could possibly be a slightly bent shaft as well, it would probably be quite hard to see that is out of true without the backing plate or disc fitted because of the small circumference and nothing to compare it to while its spinning. unless you have a dial gauge to use to check it.

Is the drum that you cut down trimmed down enough so that the disc can sit 100% flush against it? I've know people to not trim it down enough before and the disc wouldn't sit properly.
