Has the SU got the right needle and spring in it?

Are all the pipes plumbed up properly? Is the carb in good working order?

Um not sure what needle and spring.it has tbh it came straight of a 1.3 aparently so is the 1.3 same as 1.6
Um well we only put on the fuel pipe and accelerater cable on to see if it did crank over
As it was stood still for 2 months lol and it did but we have to get some dubilie clips and pipe for the vacume first but it runs alright if u rev it is there a idler screw on.a Su

Ive got the hif44 and I cant get the thing to run right it keeps bogging down. I found abit off rubber in the jet but didnt make difference for long when I moved it. The other thing is that it uses all the damper oil every 20 miles or so. If I don't use the choke it will do about 35mph but with the choke it will splutter its way up to about 50mph but doesnt run well. I was thinking of buying a carb rebuild kit on ebay for £ 35 but I really dont know what the problem is with it. Are all hif44 carbs the same? As I dont want to get the wrong kit. Its a 1.6 8v engine with a yellow spring but havent checked needle. Thx guys

I wouldn't have thought it could use damper oil that quickly without there being damage to the piston.

Whip the dash pot off and check the piston and the needle. There is a small photo guide I posted at the start of this thread somewhere if you need it.

The fact that you need the choke to run implies that the carb is allowing too much air through... this is normally caused by either the mixture being vastly incorrect, or if you can't get rid of it adjusting the mixture, the piston going up to easily.

As dan said, its likely you have damage to the piston or plunger somewhere
The oil in the dashpot helps to slow down the rising of the piston, so I would check the seals on the plunger and the piston first.

Im suffolk near ipswich. I will check the piston for damage and go from there. Funny u say about to much air because it does have a massive k and n on it lol. Thx for advice

Although scottie hates them, the SU should be able to deal with a K&N fine...

Get it running without the filter on it, and rev it slowly while looking into the carb throat... if the piston moves up and down smoothly with the revs its probably OK... if it shoots open really quick then that's your problem

Well when a filter doesn't actually filter the crap out of the air and lets it all into your engine why would anyone like them? :thefinger:
