Today as I drove the SJ back to London, I realised that 55mph is roughly 3500rpm in 5th. Which is next to useless with the G13 engine. I've bought a new rocklobster I want to fit, which will put 55mph at around 4000 rpm.

4200rpm with the 3.9 diffs.

That's not good for a diesel *at all*. To get the SJ in the same ballpark RPM/speed ratios as the Yaris, I'd need a 0.8/1 ratio high instead of the 1.58/1 I'm going with.

I think the idea of going diesel might not work with my gearing.

The whole point is to make it more fuel efficient, but it won't be with the gearing as it is! 73mph is at the redline! The yaris redlines at about 154mph (in theory). Yes, I know it will *never* get to 154mph, but that long-leggedness is one of the reasons it sips fuel at a rate of 70mpg.

So I know you like the idea, Chris, but I'm not going diesel, I just don't think it'll work. The idea was to make the SJ drive similarly to the Yaris, and this isn't going to be anything like it.

The euro trip will probably have to happen in the Yaris, or a Pajero diesel (I'm considering buying one, doing the trip, then selling it when I get back). Or a Land Cruiser, if I can get one for a song.

A little bummed out at all this, but it's better to think this through properly than end up with something undriveable...

One motor that may tick your boxes and they come in Diesel and 4x4 version and that is the Mazda Bongo and you can also sleep in them as well,i am still looking at adding one along side my Vitara LWB.

A few mates that go metal detecting with me have the Bongo's and both of them run the diesel's them on chip fat from the local chip shops in the area,they treat it some how i assume filter it etc and then use it in the fuel tank as normal.And of course they can run it on normal diesel as well.

If it was me fitting the pug 2.1 I would run standard sammy gearing, highest ratio everything I can get and 31s. The bigger 2.1 prefers lower revs so it's going to need it haha
Wouldn't be using it as aggressively as my swb for pay and plays or trials so don't really need that much of a low ratio

I have an AWD Bongo as well, they only come with in a TD with an auto and return mpg in the low 20s. Its a very good van but expensive to run.
