New SJ member questions!!

Hi... I just posted an introduction, but I have a few questions already!!

I just picked up a standard 1986 SJ410 soft top last night and luckily had an uneventful journey home in it but it had been garaged without being driven for a number of months, so was spluttering above 50 to begin with... It seems to have cleared now and is pulling to 60, but is there anything I should look at first?

I will do all the oils and filters today and stick some new plugs in her of course... just wondered if the carb needs a clean out?

Also, this is a real newbie question, can you engage 4x4 on the road? I had a S3 landy and you couldn't in that... just wondered if the SJ could deal with it...

No, no no. don't be using 4WD on any thing other than slippy surfaces. Do that and you will have years of fun, and the odd bit of tinkering.

TOP TIP: Don't modify it, or you will get onto a slippery slope and not be able to stop modifying it!!

I figured, the 4x4 would be not suited to the road... that's fine. At the moment, I am not interested in modding it... I spent ages looking for a standard one, so I am happy at the moment just to get everything straight and working well.

Someone has fitted an after market air filter and I think it's running a bit lean... pops when you accelerate over 50. Paradoxically it seems to run too cool as well... any suggestions on that front?

Looks a nice and tidy 410. It may benefit from new points and condenser assuming it's not been converted to electronic ignition.
The carbs are generally very good on those.

Hi... thanks, that is a good idea... no definately no electronic ignition... I shall do a search for those parts. It is running quite cold, the needle doesn't get far off the bottom of the dial... but it needs the choke every time you start it, which i would have thought implied it was a bit lean... I know it has been garaged for about 8 months without being driven... it has improved a lot by just being run around.

Well done. I saw that briefly on eBay and then it went! Sounded a good deal.
There aren't many standard ones around now so a nice find - esp. a 410. My recently acquired 413 has improved considerably with use (had been laid up before i got it) - apart from that lots of knowledge here for help and finding bits etc. Enjoy!

My old 410 ran quite cold...for all the seven years I owned her, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Aftermarket filters can be a bad idea, they can let in a lot of crud into the carb that the standard filter wouldn't. I'd suggest cleaning the carb and filter, maybe replace the inline fuel filter too, and look for a standard filter and box.

Might be worth chucking some fuel system cleaner in the tank.
I would also see if you have a fuel filter on the inside of the chassis leg at the back next to the tank
Never hurts to change the filter.
Also, check your points gap
