1.3 engine rebuild kits

Post by gamble63 » Fri Nov 07, 2014 10:53 pm

"rebuilding" a 1.3 engine in the next couple of months hopefully.

its for our trip to Mongolia and back, How much would you guys rebuild of the engine if you were doing it yourself. Ive seen some rebuild kits that come with new pistons, some with water pumps. Or some with just new bearings and rings, gaskets etc.

Planning to strip the engine down and see what condition its in first.

Curious at where you guys would buy a rebuild kit from? ones ive seen are on ebay £123 from Dubai ?

Cheers :guns:

Dubai? Really? If the pistons look ok and the bores aren't scored I'd do the gaskets, water pump, cam belt and dizzy. Is it a carb model? Rebuild that or get a brand new one for piece of mind. Put in a new radiator too and fan belt and carry spares for your epic trip.

Yeah good shout, was thinking of doing a Su carb conversion purely because its a more popular carb and think it will be easier to find parts over the world plus easier to work with?

Cheers

SU is a very good carb and quite cheap compared to let's say a Weber. My 410 engine has an SU carb, runs sweet. Natch do all the usual things, plugs, leads etc and take spares, lots!

Strip and clean your starter motor while you're in there, and maybe fit a relay to make sure you don't suffer from clicky starter while you are out there.

And yes, go with a HIF44 version of the SU Carb if you can, it's a much less problem prone Carb than the standard Aisin one.
