As you are new to welding i would not go for a gas less type welder if you can help it, i Know budget is always a problem. With gas less you will be using a flux core wire which is very easy to bend. Learning to weld you will often have a lot of issues with how far away to hold your torch from your work piece. Your wire will jab against the work piece while you are learning and with a flux core wire you will find it kinks easy and you end up un jamming your welder a lot and wasting meters of wire.

If you buy a cheap one and its crap you only have to buy another.

will weld anything from 1mm up to 8mm can do more if you know what you are doing. welds well with Co2 which can get from drinks companies for around a tenner if you want. Best results would be from argon co2 mix, but i have used both.

Ive had many cheap welders and this one is fantastic. As you know, when you look at the price of having someone else repair parts of your car you can make your money back with these in time and effort in no time.

youll be amazed what you will weld once you can. Also i would not waste your time paying for a course half the time they just show you the basics and then you practice on some scrap. you can learn the basics off you tube, techniques etc then just practice on scrap. Another reason to have a decent powerful welder is that most of them weld them self and you just make it look pretty with practice. Cheaper welders require a lot more skill from the welder to get a decent strong weld.

I bought a cheap gasless mig and almost gave up on it.. Even Twiss couldnt get a nice looking weld out of it... then i got an Auto Darkening mask.... WOW what a difference being able to see what your doing makes!!

I have now welded a lot of stuff and can make decent looking welds on thin and thick stuff.. here is some scrap i practiced on (im still very much a novice welder!!):



i put this weld face down on a thin pole and stood one foot either side to try and bend the weld backwards... didnt budge (im 85Kg).. even jumping on it didnt bend it so its very strong.

And here is a massive patch i welded into the exhaust (sprayed it black after):
