Looking for guides to rebuild diffs, as I now have 8 of them for my SJ, so I thought it was about time I taught myself how to set up bearing preload, pinion preload, backlash, etc etc.
I found this video:

Does anyone have a guide they found particularly useful in learning about diffs?

Re: Differential rebuilding guide
Thanks! Found that as a zip file about the time I posted. I think I'm going to start off by stripping down one of the rear 3.7's for it's side gears and transplanting them into a front 3.9 (for my spare diff, going 3.9 rear diffs in both axles).
Basically I'd like to get all the tools and stuff required to do a complete and professional rebuild. But it'll be a couple of weeks at least before I'll be in a position to do the teardown and rebuild.

Re: Differential rebuilding guide
There's a video I posted on page 2 of the thread Scottie linked to that I found useful when doing mine.
Janspeed manifold, LWB Vit vented discs and calipers

I trust this means you are feeling better Anton!
Good luck with the diffs, I wouldn't tackle one.

Yup, after watching all these videos and reading the ebook, I think that this is well within my abilities - I just need the correct tools.dan_2k_uk wrote:There's a video I posted on page 2 of the thread Scottie linked to that I found useful when doing mine.
Time will tell if I'm being overconfident or realistic.
That vid you posted talked about setting the backlash with shims - I don't think our diffs work like that, they work more like the one in the video I saw first. But it's all good learning material. It's not as scary as I first thought. And I believe that I know what the solid crush collars are for now!
I bet you wouldn't mind so much if you had 6 spares...donkeychomp wrote:I trust this means you are feeling better Anton!

Health problems still kicking my ass, but I'm tired of not getting on with SJ related modificationary.
