I've always wanted a beetle, as I just like the look of one, but I think I would just paint it normally. however, if done right, clear laquer does look quite good, as I think it would on scottie's bug.
there's a guy here locally, and he sanded his whole beetle down to panel steel, masked some flames on the front, and put some salt spray on it, and left it for a day. he then buffed it up, and clear laquered the whole car, so it's shiny steel with some very nice rusty flames on the front, but the rust is not going anywhere, and it looks awesome
