Thanks guys!
I had a feeling that's where it was, but I haven't been well this week and rather than go buy a decent torch, I got lazy and asked.
Hopefully tomorrow I can clean off that area (I couldn't see anything there, but my block is covered in a goodly amount of Surrey right now) and finish off my paperwork.

If it's a 1298 it's probably a G13BA engine.
I think the 1324cc is the G13A
The 1298cc is the G13BA
Yup, I think it's a BA. Originally the car had an A in it (1324) but it started to smoke so badly, I once managed to hide an entire single-decker bus with it. As in, you couldn't see a single inch of the bus!
Replaced the usual suspects (valve seals) and cleaned and reconditioned the block, but it carried on smoking just the same - so instead of mucking about, I bought a new engine.
Now that I'm planning on putting a Jago Geep body on it and getting it road legal, that'll be an "issue" for the man from Del VOSA.

I was reading somewhere (I think on here, actually!) that the G13's are about 85KG, where the G16's are about 105. If that's true (and I have no reason to believe it's not) then they have to be significantly different, even if they share design aspects. Not going to swap my 13 for a 16 because of that (extra power is nice, but extra weight not so much when the car spends a lot of time at >45 degrees...).

The blocks themselves aren't that different, the stroke is longer and the bore on the g16 is 1mm larger, so the block is just a little bit taller than the 1.3, heads are almost identical apart from valve and port sizes and the cam grind.
I would imagine the weight difference is in things like the double pulley, bigger flywheel on the g16 and other small things that add up? The block and heads themselves would be very similar in weight.

Scottie - I'd like it if that were true, because I would like a G16B in mine with bike carbs. Maybe dan_2k_uk can weigh his blocks and let us know? For me, weight is a serious concern. I'm going for a plastic kit car body because it's ultra-light, and I'm trying to add lightness...
That and it looks 95% like a Willys anus, and that's just freakin' cool.
My plan for the car currently involves getting as many as 3 V5's (hopefully just 2, but I suspect it's going to need 3) but if I did swap for a 16B, it might end up being 4 V5's. The DVLA isn't going to love me...

Here's all the details regarding those engine weights, it's pulled from here
http://www.suzukiclubuk.co.uk/phpBB3/ph ... =13&t=3537" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
G16 is around 104KG (230lbs) with everything fitted, water & oil & including the rad.
G13BA 1298cc 85.558kg. The complete engine as you might expect to be lifting it out (with manifolds, carburetor, air cleaner, alternator, clutch, radiator hoses and oil but no starter motor)
you wont even notice the difference in weight, plus you'll have more power with the G16, especially with bike carbs.

So it's just shy of 30kg heavier? That's more than a third of the 1.3's original weight!
Is the extra weight taken up in ancillaries like PAS pumps etc? If so, then it's a more attractive proposition since I want to go PAS anyway (I can turn the wheel with no problems, but other members of my family can't).
I'm more interested in lightness (and stability at crazy angles) than power, because I'm about to shave off quite a lot of weight by swapping the body. The 1.3 performs pretty well, although I will admit more grunt is always welcome. But I've never felt that more power would've gotten me out of a situation that the 1.3 failed to get me out of...
Where'd you get your stats on the motors? I'm thinking that I have enough work ahead of me (body swap will be followed up by a conversion to coils) for the time being, but once the car's built I will start considering a swap. But more for PAS/MPG's sake than power's sake - I'm starting to think I might go down the route of fuel injection with bike throttlebodies and a megasquirt (I'm *not* going to play with stock ECU's and immobilisers!)...
The current engine might be sufficient for that, though, and more than good enough until the car is on the road!
Decisions, decisions...

No if you notice the G16 is weighed with the radiator and full of water and the 1.3 has been weighed with less fitted so thats where 90% of the weight difference is
There is only 27mm difference in the block height and the internals are all very similar.
You really wouldn't notice the difference! The stats are pulled from a few other forums but are all reliable sources, I wouldn't post them up if I thpught they were not accurate.

That seems to make more sense, as the G13 and G16 heads can be swapped, so they must be *very* similar blocks. A third more weight doesn't make much sense!
I'll work out what the best engine is once I've finished the body swap and suspension work. I'd rather not go into the higher tax bracket (over 1549cc) as it's £215 a year compared to £130/year. The G15 swift block looks good for that, it's got 95ft-lb compared to my current 74, and the HP (which isn't that interesting to me) is 95 from 67. Ported, polished, throttle bodied and megasquirted, it's probably capable of a lot more - but I'm after torque/mpg, not HP. I'm thinking that a good exhaust would probably help too, it's just all this costs moolah and time...
The plan with the next engine swap (if I do one) is to strip and recondition it, then get it running on an engine stand, do all the mods (porting/polishing etc) and once I'm happy with the way it runs/emissions etc (lambda sensor up the exhaust) I'll do the swap. But that's all for many, many months from now, if it happens at all.

Did we ever get the G15 in any UK cars? Not sure we did?

The new model swift has a 1.5, but that's the M15. I dunno if they ever fitted the G15 - I assumed they did, but I don't know...
I'll look into it in earnest when the rest of the car's done.
Edit: Nope, looks like we only got the G10, G13 and G16. The Ignis and Swift got the M15a from about 2000 onwards, so I'll do some research into the M series and see if that's a good alternative to a G series engine. For all I know, they could be cast iron and/or have incompatible bolts/bellhousings/somethings - but I'll look into it properly when I get the time.
Thanks, Scottie, you're a dead helpful chap!
