Well I have A framed around 100miles with both boxes in neutral with no probs but maybe I was just lucky.

I know this is an old thread, but a friend of mine had an SJ he towed on a towing dolly (braked). It didn't have any freewheeling hubs on the front. We put it in neutral/neutral and the rear wheels dragged - one span the opposite direction to the way we were towing the SJ (on grass at the time) so we concluded that with the t-case in neutral, the two props were locked together.

We put it in 2hi and the problem went away.

From what I've read, putting the t-case in neutral just disengages it from the gearbox, but still in 4wd.

I imagine the idea of 2nd gear on the gearbox and neutral on the t-box is how people have towed other 4x4's in the past, and just assumed it was how you were supposed to tow *all* 4x4's.

It was probably a Pajero, Hilux or something similar that had some strange feature that meant the gearbox had to be in 2nd for safety's sake.

I know that in a Discovery it says that it should be lifted not towed if the situation can be helped, but if towing is necessary then neutral/neutral. However, Land Rovers had a centre diff so the wheels spin the gearbox output.

The way an SJ t-box is, in neutral the input is disengauged but the front outshaft is connected to the rear. This is because the neutral is between gears like on a normal gearbox, whereas 2 high and 4 high are just engaging or disengaging the front shaft. So basically it's just the same old rule, always have your SJ in 2H unless you're short of traction.

I would imagine at some point in time the Gearbox in Neutral and Transferbox in 2H method

has been chinese whispered into Gearbox in 2nd Transferbox in Neutral :hahaha:

Towed my SJ many miles with both boxes in neutral. No issues or windup.

According to the haynes manual the vehical should not be towed with all 4 wheel on the ground unless drivesgafts are removed first

While its not a necessity, I tell you what, it definitely makes it easier on the towing vehicle if you take the props off!!!

when i use to A frame mine i just left it in netural and left the tranny box in netrual job done.

Depends what your towing it with. My Surf never even noticed it.
