Re: Front N/S brake grinding
That sounds kinda plausible, although I seriously doubt that the amount of heat generated in that mile would exceed the amount of heat generated by simply driving fast and braking hard.
Brakes international send you a caliper bare. New pistons etc, but no carrier (the stationary bit that bolts to the car) so you have to reuse your current one. Not sure if you get new bolts and sliders or not.
You also have to pay a deposit which you get back when you send them your old caliper, which they'll rebuild and sell on.
If you're going to be going with reconditioned calipers, I'd suggest doing both sides. I'd say it's worth the extra 50 spends for the peace of mind!

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
By bare, do you mean I have to fit the piston etc or does it all come ready built? I think the carrier is ok.
As Im having new pads and discs for both sides then yes, I shall change both callipers..
After my experience this morning, I do wonder why people haven't taken the bill by the horns and started setting up their own little garages and under cutting these places. Its a shocking state of affairs that people feel that they have to pay those prices.

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
I think they strip down the caliper and rebuild it with new seals and pistons, ready to bolt to your carrier. I *think*.
I've never bought a whole caliper from them, only bits to rebuild my own.
Best thing to do is call them:

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
The caliper should come ready to bolt on, however it will not come with new bolts/sliders/rubbers.
If you need these they are £11 a side. Please don't quote the number as being exact for yours.
As you have emailed them they should make sure you get the correct parts.

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
Gave this pad falling out some thought as I've heard quite a few times of this happening to different makes of vehicle.
The carrier from what I remember (never measured) has about 2mm clearance either side of a new disc. Assuming the pad backplate is 5mm thick this means if worn to the metal only 3mm will be left in the carrier.
Now allow the discs to wear down by 2mm (one side) and you've only got 1mm left in the carrier.
That's highly likely to fall out under braking.
Well that's my take on it
The service limit is normally 3mm friction material on the pads and 1mm wear per side disc wear.
If this was the case the pad backplate would always be fully in the carrier.

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
There was a little spring in my rebuild kits for my calipers that was, apparantly, a brake wear indicator. Essentially, it touches the brake disk when the pads get low, making a scraping sound so you know you have to change the pads soon.
Only, I couldn't for the life of me work out how to fit them, and when I asked the guys on here, no-one knew!
It seems that maybe it's a good idea to fit them then. So the question then becomes...
How???

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
Google to the rescue:
I must see if I can find these things now (god knows where they've ended up) and fit them, for safety's sake! Although they won't matter for another 20 years at current mileage rates (I do about 500 miles a year in the SJ)...

Re: Front N/S brake grinding
**Update** well.... today 2 new discs, 4 new pads, and a new caliper arrived from good old Brakes International.... Everything went swimmingly until it came to removing that darn seized bolt.... Penetrating oil and a brew though made me see the light, and with a big flat blade and hammer I hit the hell out of the washer, got that off, and dollop more penetrating oil and it only flipping worked. My theory was take the tension out of the bolt and it would help. New bolt, jobs a good un... Brakes bled now and like new... Thank you everyone on here for your help through this.. your all flipping fab, and Brakes International, highly recommended.
