I'm agreeing with Mike. Diesel is for trucks and family cars.

If you want power go for the 16v 1.6. If you want simplicity 1.6 8v.

I want to keep the lower tax band and keep the insurance reasonably low...

Hmmm bike carbs? I wonder what carbs would be usable...

Suzuki, some kawasaki carbs fit easily too.

I've heard of one litre engines being brought to 100hp with bike carbs. Not sure about the torque (that should go up proportionally, as HP and torque are mathematically and intrinsically linked - you can't raise one without raising the other unless you're just messing with the redline) but perhaps that's a good avenue for research?
If you ran quad carb on the inlet you'd probably want a high-er flow exhaust system to match it. The gasses have got to go somewhere after they've been burnt.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

I know people have fitted GSXR600 carbs to 1300's, and I *think* I remember a guy on retrorides saying he fitted them to a 1.0 micra, and got 100hp. Fairly sure that was a 16v micra, though.

Ed - depends on whether you're interested in torque or HP. I'd be looking for torque, and the standard exhaust, although it'll kill top end HP (as will the 8v head), will result in more low end torque.

Depends on what you want, and what the insurance firms have to say about the carbs. I'm not an expert, so perhaps I'm talking out of my backside...

Gixer carbs will fit but it's a real pain in the arse to do. Why not just wait a couple of years and chuck in a Vit lump? I had a 410 and it did 70 (just), why do you want that much oomph? Whatever mod you do you'll have to tell your insurers and if it's performance related they'll tell you to sod off. Live with it for now, do the engine mods later.
If it ticks over...leave it
