When mine is running right it'll do over 60 easily. Not quite as pimped at Scotts but on 33s with a rock lobster.

Nikki carb should be fine. I'm using the 1.3 manifold (SU modded) and 1.3 exhaust manifold.

Presume you serviced it when you fitted it?

yer, i put new oil in it. and i had new plugs and leads on the old engine so i put them on the new one, dont imagine that would be a problem though.

Mine is running whatever plugs are for a 1.6. Dont know if they are different to 1.3s. I think my leads are the originals.

Try fiddling with the carb a bit. Check all air pipes are clear.

i tuned the carb so the oxygen/lamda reading was around 1.00. i was always told that that is the closest you can get to perfect combustion. i cant imagine there is anything else i should have changed on the carb as its running a bigger engine?

This is really anoying me now:( it doesnt feel at all as powerfull as a 1.6 should and it drinks quite a bit of fuel.

Is the carb a 1.6 carb?

Why not just fit the SU with the elbow? Sounds to me like your carb needs rejetting, presume the O2 reading was set at idle? What was it like throughout the rev range?

Do you have any idea what car/engine the Nikki came off?

im not sure what the carb came off of, i think it was advertised for a suzuki. might have to do some reaserch on it but i thought these carbs where pretty universal things as my mate had one on a beetle and an hillman minx.

had a look at the vacuum advance today, they should move quite freely when you suck on the pipe right? well mine has that little green valve inline, and with that in it is really hard to make the plate in the distributor move, and without it it moves really free. so i thought i would take that out and see if it goes any better but unfortunately its worse. so whats the deal with that valve? does it only go one way round? should it make the vacuum advance hard to operate?
