Thinking of doing away with my home made j bolts and putting an adaptor plate between the engine and gearbox, however with the extra thickness will the engine and gear box still fit into the same mounts, as the entire engine gearbox length will be 10mm ish longer?

Isn't it meant to be the better way of doing it? If it makes no difference either way I'll leave it, but had done that as a temporary measure.

Mines about 5-6mm thick and it DID bolt up ok to the standard mount originally ;)

I wouldn't worry if it works. Me and Trotter don't have adapter plates and no problems.

Yeah I didn't use one for years... the only reason I'm using one now is cos it came with my 16v engine ;)

I'm sure that my adapter plate is only about 3mm thick.
