fatboy alloy strength

Seen a few sets of vitara fatboy alloys. looking for a set of wheels to take these 31" tyres and know i now need at least 15x8

these types

are the alloys much weaker that your average steel rim and is it worth looking around for some steel 15x8.

they need to survive Mongolia and back

31s are fine on 7j rims, I had them for ages.

In terms or actual strength a Vitara alloy would probably be OK however if it was me I would rather have something that can be hammered back into shape and will bend rather than break.

the tyres are 10.5" wide will that still be ok on 15x7 wheels?

I had my 31x10.5s on 7s for ages. Fitted lovely and only ever popped one off the bead once because I had too little air in it.

Should be a reliable setup for what you want. Keeps the rims safe inside the tire and you will get away with running lower pressures if you need to con any sand or soft ground.

I would try get some rims without too much offset as you don't want to be doing bearings in the middle of knowhere.

Do you need bigger wheels and tyres? a stock wheel with something like a 215/80 would be a lot less strain on the drivetrain and the 410 parts are a lot weaker than the 413 parts. Its going to be a dog to drive on the stock gearing as well.

As above and bear in mind you'll want spare wheels and tyres too. The bigger they are the less room you have for other stuff...

yeah is a good point to be fair, but how im weighing things up so far is like so:

driving to Mongolia in it and budget is medium to low. the big mud tyres on it at the mo are not gunna stay on it and i have 5 bf Goodrich all terrains in good condition sitting here so just thought to put them on and give it a nice wide foot print for the roads later in the trip.

changing the engine out for a 1.6 with 5 speed so can at least cruise at a speed where we are making good progress without trashing it. Used to running big tyres and watching how they deal with rougher terrain compared to small tyres.

its not going to be trashed or driven hard, but do like the idea of a wider footprint for when we get outside of Europe
