A lift would work, but generally the least amount of expense and work seems to be a "virtual lift" where you cut the arches and enlarge them.
A big enough lift on it's own will probably require lift springs or an spring over axle conversion, which also requires a high steer conversion.
Don't even think about z-bar conversions, they can be dangerous.

I did a 2" lift with shock extensions...was a bad idea. Like Anton says a virtual lift is the best bet.
If it ticks over...leave it

I ran 31s just with a VL with no problems. All on standard suspension.

Will also be worth making alterations to your gearing too

Nah just do what I do and stick a better engine in
I found even the high sammy gearing was ok for most things...
Although I will have to reduce now I'm frequently driving on rocks!

Or stick a better engine in and lower your gearing, then snap drive shafts
Hopefully now a thing of the past

Re: 31/10.15r15 on sj
With some 2" lift springs and correctly positioned bumpstops you can run 31s with some minor work elsewhere like trimming the front bumper crossmember and folding over/cutting off and welding up the seam on the bulkhead in the front wheel arch so no need to cut the arches out.
You'll also need to limit the steering lock or the tyres will hit the springs and fit longer shocks and brakelines for the best results.
You should always correct the gearing for the tyre size, no matter what size engine you are running for the best results and to save your clutch.

Yeah, but Scottie - it's still probably easier to do a VL than fit new springs, brake lines, bumpstops etc.
I like my lifted SJ a lot, but I regret not just going for a VL.
