Hey guys, stripped the Sj down to a chassie today, took the axles off and started to strip them down:
the rear drums where stuck on and half cracked and the pistons and brake shoes messed up:
so will need new drums either side new shoes and all the mechanisms and new pistons. is that going to be a massive bill? and is it going to be cheaper to switch to a rear disc conversion.
as this is all a charity rally we are looking for the cheapest solution to all?
as for the front it will need its front hubs rebuilding and the seals replacing too.
engine is currently half rebuilt just got to rebuild the bottom half and the body is getting there too.
what would you guys do?
Cheers

Definitely go rear discs - the drums fill up with crap and rot and stick and generally become a pain in the arse.

Re: Help with amount of rebuild
saw the method for doing the conversion on the guides section here and looks pretty sweet, will be trying to source a front axle locally and taking the parts off that i need, will help with carrying spares if needed on the trip.
cheers

Make sure you try and get the same brake calipers you have already...
i.e. spanish+spanish or jap+jap
then you only need to carry 1 type of brake pads

Question - do you have a transfer case handbrake?

Yes I can see it on the tbox in the picAnton wrote:Question - do you have a transfer case handbrake?
Brake bits aren't that expensive, however it probably would cost around the same amount to go rear discs.
