Gearbox whine sj 410
my 410 gearbox wines when in neutral when it is cold and also it make the engine labour slightly and some times is enough to stall the engine. Do all sj's do this?

Re: Gearbox whine sj 410
Sounds to me like your oil might have mud in it, or just be thick, sludgy crap. Something is dragging a LOT, mine idles lovely (ok, it's a 413 not a 410, so different engine and different gearbox, but not *THAT* different!).
Might also be a dodgy selector pushing one of the synchro's and making it drag? Might be a dodgy bearing? Something a little out of alignment?
No gearbox in neutral should stall an engine. Ever. Shouldn't be difficult to find another gearbox and swap out if it's not something simple like dodgy oil.

both my 410's do it to an extent however I have a spare gearbox that I thought of having rebuilt, is that sensible and worth the money?

If it's going to cost hundreds, then no. I'd just try to get a known-good gearbox instead from someone on here who is swimming in parts. Or maybe one of the guys on here will be willing to rebuild it for you without charging the earth.
I've rebuilt most of the moving parts on my SJ, and I have to say that so far, it's definitely noticeable. My engine runs sweet (starts on the button, doesn't overheat, pulls well) my axles are fully rebuilt and don't do anything strange, my brakes are fully rebuilt and pull 'er to a stop real lovely.
I haven't rebuilt my gbox yet, but I have bought a spare one that I plan on tearing down and rebuilding because 5th is whiney on my current box.
When I'm finished rebuilding bits, I should be left with an SJ that will be running smoothly 15 years from now. It's up to you to decide if you think that's worth doing, nobody but you can really answer that question.

Gut feeling tells me if it is the same with both your SJ410 it must be a common trait, oil is always thickest when its cold as long as it goes away when its warmed up i would not worry about it.
I doubt that your trucks have moved much in recent years so i would think a good thrashing would clean them out and then i would think they would tick over better, always works wonder a good old thrashing every so often rather than sitting doing nothing.
Only you can make the decision to rebuild a SJ or not, alot depends on 2 factors,if you are able to do all the mechanical and possibly major body work yourself and you have the storage facilties to rebuild it then it could be game on and of course money comes into it as well, but if its a really rust heap of junk but you have lots of dreams of rebuilding it again but dont have the mechanical knowledge, bodywork skills including welding or have no money then game off its as simple as that.
Dont like bursting folks bubbles but i am a realist, and from your initial posts and age i would stick my neck out here and say you dont have any of the skills to do a rebuild or the money either,of course i could be totally wrong and you have massive deep pockets of money.

Re: Gearbox whine sj 410
yeah the one I'm talking about is an ex-farm vehicle so its a bit rough around the edges but is pretty solid and goes though the mot no problem. I have no real plans to do that one up in terms of paint work cause I kinda like it the way it is, just get it mechanically sound.

Has that one current got a ticket on it,if so how long and did it highlight any problems the last time it got a ticket ??? as that information is very important and in theory could dictate what the future holds for the truck.
