Hi all. Noticed for a while that I seem to have a bit of a clattery noise from the drive train somewhere. Usually only noticeable when driving alongside a wall or similar - the echo seems to pick it up! I wondered if it was propshafts so finally had a look yesterday and saw a couple of grease nipples and figured no harm in greasing 'em!
I wanted to get easier access and look to see if there were more nipples I couldn't see....and here's where my ignorance sets in....
I had the rear up on axle stands but found I couldn't turn the shafts by hand. Ah I thought, the hand brake is on so I took it off. Still couldn't turn props. Mainly the rear one I'm talking about here. So..... I started the engine and put it in gear - figuring that would at least turn the shafts - which it did but, only one tear wheel turned! The other one kind of stuttered, as if trying to turn but I could move it by hand either direction. Excuse my ignorance guys but can anyone shed light on this? What's likely to be busted? Can I fix it? Cheers!

Thats how an open diff works, power will always go to the wheel with least grip. But you should be able to turn the wheels by hand, and the other side will go in the opposite direction

I had similar query about my front wheels, probably on the 'stiffer' side, the brake is binding a smidgen more.
I found it doesn't take much resistance for the diff to decide which side gets the power.
