starter fault

Post by evolve123 » Thu Mar 09, 2017 9:11 pm

Hi All
I have just replaced the engine in my sj its a 1.6 8v vitara lump but i didn't take any notes of how it was wired up. i have a pos wire from battery to pos on starter then have a short wire from starter pos to post on back of alternator there is an earth from the starter bolt that goes to an isolater on the dash then from isolator to neg on battery also a small wire from starter to push button switch. when i put ignition on and press the starter it just shorts out,
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks

There shouldn't be a wire from the starter to the alt

Hi Scottie thanks for replying to me, i have now got it going for some reason unknown to me we put an jump lead onto the earth on the battery and the other end onto the engine and it started then took the jump lead away and it starts fine,(strange old thing). i tried disconnecting the lead from starter to alt and it won't work the ignition at all with that disconnected, its a bit of a frankenstein and as the last owner built it I'm not sure how it was all put together.
