Buying sj413, viewed and now unsure.

Post by gsommo » Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:15 pm

Hello everyone, some advise from someone here could solve my issue.

So as some of you might know, I have been on the look out for a 413. I have just been to look at one that was 10 miles from my house which was useful. When I got there, i was greeted by a lad that did not seem all there, bit dodgy if you ask me.

Anyway the car at first glance looked totally mint. Nice dark green colour with a black removable cab on the back, little bit tatty here and there (like a seal on the cab and 1 small arch missing, maybe a little rust and the odd small dent, but that is fine), upon trying to start it it seemed like the starter motor was being dodge, not engaging or something like that and so the car would not start, eventually it engaged after about 10 mins of fannying around and the engine and exhaust sounded great.

The only problem was that it was getting dark so it was not that easy to see everything. So i asked him where the documents where and he said that he could not find them. What kind of problem can this cause? Is it possible to send away for a new one or what?

Basically im not sure what to do, these things dont come up often esp anywhere near me in scotland. So what do i do, im just not sure. Any thoughts would be good. The link to the original add is below.

Thanks

Dents dings and rust arw normal on most SJs. It sounds like the starter motor solenoid. Any auto electrician can sort that. Or you can get a recon unit.

He may have lost the docs. These can be applied for from DVLA but i would possibly do one of those mobile phone reg check things (bout £5) just to make sure it isn't stolen.

Good zuks are getting rare now. Mine was £150 5 years ago and it was rotten (thrown half of it away and travelled 150mile to glasgow for a new front end) http://www.superzuki.co.uk

so long as its not stolen and the reg / vin plate match i would say buy it.

Hope that helped.

like jordi said,,, most come with rust, but thats sortable,, theres various ways of checking the cars past,, even on the mobile phone,,
you dont say how much he wants,, is it moted?.. has it any mods etc. But like you say, there harder to track down.
one on E-bay yesterday sold for £2500.
The starter issiue, isnt worth worrying to much, worst case is starter ring on the flywheel, but its propably the solenoid/starter.

The guy is asking 700, i reckon i can get him down to 600. It does have a few things.

Really good looking stainless steel snorkel, petrol tank in boot, new rad, clutch, fuel filter ( so he says). Cool lookin alloys with good big tires with plenty of tread. Its been lifted (shackle i believe) and has some sort of shocks on the back too, look almost like dampers or something that are installed at an angle (was hard to see all this stuff as it was so dark when i viewed, only time available). It has full integrated rollcage, heavy duty bumpers front and rear, all lights and stuff works. Engine and exhaust sound sweet as a nut. removable black hard top. I mean the list goes on.

Its just that the guy was a bit of a strange lad and cant find docs (hhmmmmm sounds stolen to me hahahaha), and thats what is putting me off a little bit. But im on the case of getting him to try and come up with the docs. If he does and I can get it for 600 i think I will go for it as it is a cool looking machine. Few dodgy noises front he engine bay, but i think it was the fuel pump working away when the starter was trying to engage etc as when it actually started it was all good i think.

My issue here is that I want to buy this car for work ( and yeh i know that it is small, but i just need it to cart me around). I dont mind doing some work on it, but when it comes to an MOT i dont want to be spending mad money trying to get it going.

Anyway guys sorry for the essay again, your words of wisdom are so useful, its nice to get some advice as I am a bit of an anxious buyer when it comes to cars, I always think that something better will crop up instead of just biting the bullet.

Thanks again.

As long as those mods half been done half decent £700 sounds a bargain. Ive seen standard knackers go for £1000 recently.

I have been offered £500 for my pile of bits, the fool actually thought id sell it.

600 (even 700)with those mod's Would be a good price....these little trucks are really being plucked up pretty quick...especially if there's a bargain to be had

I paid 300 for mine and it was 100% standard.... Just buying my shocks, wheel spacer's and grizzly's take's it up to his asking price. :P

Have you test driven yet... Made sure 4wd works...?

not driven it yet, my friend who is in the car industry is checking the cars history eetc hpi and all that to see if it is legit. I want to go back, check the car in the daylight have a drive and check to see if reg and vin number match. If all is well ill make him an offer, the only issue then is that i need to get it taxed and moted, know a guy that does mot so might take him along to check it out with me before i buy.

Thanks again for the advice, it is a sweet looking car so i hope that everything is legit and ill have myself a little sj.

Cant wait.
