i'm not to clued up on grand vitaras but do you know if it has any kind of freewheeling hubs equipped to the front, you get manual, auto and air operated ones on grand vitaras throughout the years. if you have then they might either need to be locked or they are not locking automatically? Could you give us the year and model to help us out a bit more.

how did you notice, was it when it was jacked up off the floor? If it was and it has automatic free wheeling hubs that might be why the dont appear to be locked as i would presume they need to be on the ground and moving to lock themselves so drive a few metres in 4wd first and then check.
If it has air operated ones then there could be an air leak or the actuator within the front diff housing could be faulty?

Our lasses 03 grand vitara lwb, has permenant 4wd, so you can go to 4wd high to 4wd low and locked (i imagine a center difflock)

what year is your grand vitara? I have noticed that you say you are not getting a 4wd light when you switch it to 4wd however that might not actually be related to the problem. we do really need to know what year your vehicle is to work out what the problem might be.

My bet is on the air activated free wheeling hubs if it has them?

I cant help much as i only got my GV TD a couple of months ago, and im trying to find out as much as i can about them myself.

Your best bet is to go to http://www.suzuki4u.co.uk, and check out the forums there. this site covers every suzuki motor built.
