413 engine and gearbox change - as one

Post by timpaton » Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:11 pm

Hi,

I have established that i have a top end death rattle, and the gearbox is just as bad.

I have got hold of a replacement engine and box as one piece.

Question - can this be fitted as one from underneath with a trolley jack, or is it from above with an engine crane job?

easiest way if you are pulling both is to use a crane and pull it out through the engine bay. You can remove the whole front end in about 20/30 minutes and that make it easier.

I personally would split the box and the engine...
I don't think it takes much longer than 30 minutes to drop the gearbox out? :)

If you've got a hoist it's easier all in one unit I think. Where are you in the country? might be a member close by who is will ing to lend you one???

That depends on the hoist and the lift ;)

It would have taken a miracle to hoist the engine and box into Russ' SJ with its 8" lift haha

I guess it would be much easier with one of those spreader bar things to level it out

Id go for complete unit, just remember you need a lot oh height to get the box out, like scot said the front can come off but you may be easier without, just you will need 2 people to stop it coming forward and smashing sh1t out of the front.

If your near me i can help
