Rear diff,

Post by ianedwards » Wed Feb 22, 2012 5:43 pm

Hi, I've been sorting out my rear axle on 413, new brakes, bearings, and oil.

Main problem is the main input shaft seal is leaking oil since the change, as it defiantly wasn't before.

Any one got any ideas why this is.

Ian
Cheers

sounds like the old stuff had just gone too thick to leak, i guess it was quite creamy looking because of water contamination?

you can swap the seal but really you need to fit a new crush collar as well. I would be inclined to replace the seal, crush collar and both pinion bearings.

It's not that hard to swap the pinion bearings, ideally you do need a dial meter to set the backlash however if you carefully take note of how it comes apart, exact amount of turns to undo the carrier bearing tensioners etc. then you can do it without, my old rear diff was set up just by feel and I never had any problems with it.

here's a little guide http://www.rsmfg.co.uk/page17.html it is for replacing the standard crush collar with a solid one but it gives you a good idea.
