Snorkle ideas/designs
Got a nice snorkle top I asked for for xmas.
Got access to all sorts of plastic/rubber/flexy pipe at work. My only hard and fast design rule I have is I want all the external bits to be solid pipe not some awfull hoover pipe going up the side of my screen!!
There are 3 routes I'm aware of people commonly using.
Through the wing, cut out the side of the bonnet, and through the bulkhead.
Want to keep the original airbox and also still be easily able to fold/remove the windscreen in the summer.
What are others setups like? What problems have people come across?
Dan

As your probably aware ive got this it is from mad from small drain pipe and pre aire filter of a tractor it isnt beautiful but i have never had any problems with it and im using the standard air box aswell. But as you said you wish to fold down the windscreen i cannot with this due to the tube brackets are screwed to the windscreen surround.

heres what mine looked like when i had it, it was a wing exit one and my biggest problem was that i had the only filter directly on top, it made an awesome noise but it was just too loud to have right in your ear hole:( but i think if you plumbed it up to the original air filter box you wouldn't have this problem.
oh yea, i used exhaust pipe to make it, and i also bolted mine to the windscreen so that wouldnt fold down.

Can anyone chip in with any input on the bulkhead method. Think that would be my prefered method. Need to waterproof the bulkhead once theres a massive hole through it tho.

Re: Snorkle ideas/designs
havnt seen as many people use that, probably because it isnt as easy. another reason i took mine of, someone told me as i have a petrol engine i wouldn't really want to get waterbin the engine bay even though the air intake would be fine there is still a risk of the electrics cutting out, so just try to avoid any water past the bumpers, or use the bow-wave technique.

My SJ snorkle comes off the original air box. Lots of silicone sealer and a hoover tube. 60mm hole drilled in bulkhead behind the battery. Ran the pipe through this and up the inside of the door pillar. Lots of silicone on round the hole.
Latex glove over the distributor and coil.
Never had any issues in deep water.
Plans for my Samurai are exhaust pipe work out of the wing and up window pillar with a tractor type filter on top.

Re: Snorkle ideas/designs
Not alot of people going thru the bulkhead according to google images.
Did come across this alternative carb icing fix for a snorkled SJ airbox with the hot air feed removed though.
I need to do summin a bit different with it but cant decide what.

But that's lhd so you I'm not sure if you'd be able to fit the stock air box above the pedals on rhd?

Give me a minute i'll go get some photo's mine, i went through the bulk head.
I found the top on the back of an old washing machine, it had a u-bend on the end with a flange thing on (no idea what it was for). The pipe connecting to it is off a boat bilge pump i think and the stainless pipe under the bonnet is an old boat exhaust. I planned to go off the warm air feed straight to the bulk head and then over but as said by scottie it was going to mean running the pipe inside around the pedals and steering column (cant get behind it). Was pretty simple, 90 degree bend off the air box, one on the end of the stainless facing towards the wing, Then one on the end of the snorkel with a bit of the same rubber pipe in-between. Silicone and cable tied! job jobbed! I think it looks a lot tidier this way and less likely to be ripped off.
I never took my smaller lens down so i couldn't get it far away enough to focus under the dash
Not sure how you would do it still being able to put the screen down, unless you jubilee clip the bottom of the snorkel so you an undo it and pull it off. to fasten it to the screen i just self tapered a jubilee clip into the aerial hole and slid the pipe through it.
I need to make something up to stop it scooping water in, thinking of making a gortex cover? or something a long them lines.
