panel welding with 0.9 mm wire?

Post by kiwizook » Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:45 pm

So, I don't have a welder myself
but, I can use my bosses welder :doublethumbs:
the story, however, is that his mig :weld: is set up with 0.9mm wire, and I am not sure if this is too big to weld panel steel. there is some 0.6mm wire and a tip for it, but I've been told i need to put in 0.6mm feeder rollers as well. Is this true, and are these feeder rollers expensive to put in?
on a different note, could i just weld it with 0.9mm wire? :er:

any help is greatly apreciated guys

I'm going to say 0.6mm. It would be so much easier to set up and weld as the panels are so thin. Yes it will need a feed roller to suit and the price varies a lot depending on the make of welder. However a lot of machines use a feed roller with a groove for 0.6mm and 0.8mm, all you need to do is turn the feed roller 180 degrees. So if you haven't already had a look, see if the feed roller has an extra groove. Don't think we use 0.9mm over here, if your lucky your roller may be 0.6 / 0.9mm.

If you are good and adding thicker material and welding from a nice angle you might get away with it.

If you are trying to weld something thin to the underside forget about it!

1.6mm is what you want.

Blimey that's thick

Just had a look around and 0.9mm wire over here appears to be the fluxed poop for gasless migs..

thanks for the clarification guys, i'll see if I can reverse the roller to use 0.6mm wire.

and Dand, what do you mean I need 1.6mm? do you mean the wire or the panel?

I am using 1.2mm panel to patch up the sill, and was also going to use that for the footwell and the wheel arch. will that be thick enough?

Thanks darell for the explanation and the link, I had a look at it, and the welder, and I can turn the feed wheel around as you described :cowboy:: .
i got some 0.6mm tips, so i should be good to go :rockin: .
Just gotta get it running now, so i can drive it up and down there, and I can start the :weld: . :doublethumbs:

I do all mine using 0.8mm wire just because I'm too lazy to change the wire every time I'm welding something different, you can get away with it but you need to take it real slow and tack, tack, tack, you can't really run a bead or it'll blow through and if there is a thin bit of body it can blow through as well.

Since I haven't done much :weld: at all, i'll change it to 0.6mm wire. just to be safe.
i got the stuff to change it, so it's only going to take a few minutes. I might also look at getting my own welder in the future, when i will get my second sj410.

the 0.6mm wire might make a bit tidier for me too since i have so little experience :doublethumbs:
