Weights

Post by ScottieJ » Fri May 10, 2013 6:44 pm

Thought I'd start an engine weight thread with info that people have found for all those interested.

G16 weights off teamswift.net

Block bare with main caps, water pump 48.5 lbs / 22kg
& oil filter

Cylinder head with valve train (less camshaft 25.5lbs / 11.6kg
but includes caps)

Pistons & rods (no caps), head gasket, head bolts, 8.5 / 3.85kg
cam tensioner, misc bolts

Crankshaft with front pulley bolt 25.5/ 11.6kg

Camshaft with gear 6.5 / 2.95kg

Oil pan & valve cover 8.25 /3.75kg

Oil pump, rear seal/cover, thermostat housing, 9.0 /4kg
Front pulley, oil pick up, flywheel boss, misc bolts

Total 131.75 lbs 59.76kg

G16 is around 104KG (230lbs) with everything fitted, water & oil & including the rad.
G13BA 1298cc 85.558kg. The complete engine as you might expect to be lifting it out (with manifolds, carburetor, air cleaner, alternator, clutch, radiator hoses and oil but no starter motor)

M16a weights off redline gti
block is 18.5 kilos bare add 3kg for the 4 bolt mains
Head is 18kg complete
while crank 12.5kg

53kg for head block and crank

I'd say that's not really enough of a difference to worry about

Out of interest what weight did ladaman get for the m15a and what was fitted?

The M15A as full engine except no manifolds or sump pan, but having the flywheel (no clutch) with the alternator fitted weighs a mighty 90kg according to our bathroom scales.

Ok, stop me if I'm saying something stupid, but an oil pan and manifolds can't weigh much - so would it be safe to say the M15 and the G16 are about the same weight? That is to say, complete engine as you'd pull it from a car being only slightly heavier than a G13?

I've seen an M15a resleeved on youtube, bored to 2.0. A 2 litre SJ would be a beast!!!!

Yeah the little difference there is probably wont even be noticeable when it comes to the vehicles balance, not like throwing in a heavy diesel lump.

My SJ will be 2.0 soon  much easier and cheaper to just use the J20a though ;)

I'll try and weigh the J20a once it's removed from the GV, it's all aluminium as well but does use a timing chain rather than a belt.

What I'd really like is a 600cc supercharged opposed cylinder, opposed piston camcrank engine. Should make similar power to a 2.4 litre, whilst being lighter than a G13a.

Shame they don't actually exist... :hahaha:

Anyhew... I've changed my mind so many times about what I'd like to do regarding the engine it's not even funny. And now I've changed my mind again.

I'm gonna go sit down. This is starting to get painful.

BTW - the M13's use a belt, the rest of the M's use timing chains... ;) Don't shoot me if that's wrong, it's what I read somewhere.

Just to make it really painful, I have a Subaru Impreza Turbo I will be selling soon.

2 litre flat four, opposed pistons, low centre of gravity, 230 BHP. Already with 4WD and a limited slip rear diff!!

Now that would be fun in an SJ, it's fun enough in a Subaru.
