Right then, I took the plunge and spent a whooping £45 for a 5 speed box for my SJ. The only catch is, i won't have it until August at the latest!
On the Ffestiniog Railway, we have a extremely huge volunteer workforce from literally all over the world, Australia, Germany, Czech Republic, Holland, US, New Zealand, France and China just to name a few. Luckily we have just as much in this country, one of which lives 30 miles from where this gearbox is!
So instead of paying a courier or risking blowing up my current gearbox going to get it (400 mile round trip) I asked a volunteer if he could pick it up and he said he'd be happy to pick it up and bring it to Wales the next time he is here; which is in August.
I'd rather wait a few extra weeks than spend money (I work my ass of for an apprentices' wage. Which is less than minimal wage )
I know where I can get the bearings, that's not a problem. However the seals are. I have been told that there are some seals that are 'best bought from Suzuki, just to be on the safe side'. My question is, how do I get them off Suzuki? Do I just walk into a dealership or is there a online shop type of thing?

Ring your local dealer and ask for the parts counter. If they aint much help try your next nearest one as some dealers have some real good ol boys who dont even need the computer and some have a spotty teenager and a pc.

I agree with Dan deffo get your seals from main dealer! just not my local one as there shit! i use the next nearest one!

My nearest has for the first time come up trumps. I got my gear box bolt in less than 24hrs.

When I orded a pinion seal from them it took them more like 24 weeks then 24 hrs!

Usually they are crap and can't even find the part i want. I nearly always use the next nearest. As i couldn't be arsed to travel i thought i'd give them a try again.

Not like i use them that often thankfully.

I'm starting to get really annoyed. My 5 speed box seems to do nothing but whine and not go into fifth or reverse 80% of the time!
I might risk it by driving 400+ miles to go get it. The question is, will the Zuk's current gearbox survive 400 odd miles doing 60 (ok, a bit optimistic, maybe 50) on motorways or do i just carry on going to and from work trying to be as gentle as i can untill September? (Should come August and then a month to overhaul)

would using a courier not be cheaper and safer than driving? some of the guys on here know some good couriers, ask about mate

400+ miles.

That's a whole day of your life, plus at least 10 gallons of fuel.

A courier HAS to be the best option.
