pug 1.9td and ldv g box performance ?
hi all, some time agi i did this conversion in my sj but i never actullay fettled it enough to get it running properly, it ran great just not much top speed, max 60mph.
now i am thinking it was as i moved the intercooler from top to side.
has anyone else done this conversions as it could of been the g box gearing from the ldv pilot, has lower gearing.
sorry about the typing i only have one hand to use and its doin in my head.
looking for a good diesel engine to match to a sj t box for a project.
thanks guys
wolly

There's something very wrong if you are maxing out at 60mph and it's not because of the gearing.
My 413 with big tyres maxes out at about 60mph. With about 30% less hp and less than half the torque.
What RPM's are you at when doing 60? What does it pull like from a standing start compared to the original engine and gearbox?

i did this about 4 years ago, dont have it now, it was revvy, towed a 750kg to wagtail once with no problems, just dam slow getting there. i was runnung 31`s aswell.

It could be a gearing issue. They redline at 5000rpm don't they?
Any idea on the LDV gearbox ratios.
What tbox and diffs were you running?
With 92bhp @4000rpm and 148lbs-ft at 2250rpm power shouldn't be the issue.

Re: pug 1.9td and ldv g box performance ?
it was running the 19td/ldv g box with the 410 and also had the 413 t box in as blew the 413 t box, didnt make much difference.
i think it was the gearing now, as the ldv pilot were never the best even though they were NA.
this is for a dutton sierra 4x4 conversion so just want a veg running engine, 2.8td shogun engine will be good but the g/t box are married and no seperartae as the sj boxs. could go 2.9i ford v6 as wiht my other kit car has, but its the running cost, cant have all V6 runners lol.

Yes, running a diesel in a vehicle with petrol running gear probably doesn't make as much sense for that reason, but redlining at 60mph still seems unlikely - I have a similar setup (gearing wise) and I'm not that close to 5000 rpm at 60mph.
If I ever do go diesel some dim, distant day, I'd want a gearbox that lets me cruise at 70mph at 3000 rpm - otherwise what's the point? For that, I was thinking of a BMW box, some of their diesels have a 1:0.65 6th gear, with the rest of the gears being roughly the same ratios as a standard 413 box.
Have you thought of trying to run a 320d engine and box? I don't know how well one would cope with straight veg oil, but the older generation ones might. And I read once that one of the older Beemer derv engines was 140kg, a lot lighter than the pug engine you ran - and certainly a lot lighter than a 2.8td, without being much less powerful. Possibly more fuel efficient too.
Imo still too heavy for an SJ, but probably ok for the Dutton - it's probably lighter than your average Crossflow, and a lot lighter than an Essex or Cologne.

ah the bmw diesel, next to look at, over the years i have looked at so many engine swaps you tend to forget the best to look at. from memory the old bmw are good on veg, off for a mooch now, thanks anton

Did a little googling, and if it's believable, this page claims that the BMW M47 2 litre is 117kg.
Which is getting close to light enough to fit in an SJ without causing problems, and should be fine for your Dutton, assuming it's true.

Re: pug 1.9td and ldv g box performance ?
As far as I'm aware the LDV pilot gearbox does have low gear ratios, lower than sj and vit gearboxes so with this e extra reduction from the Tbox as well I can quite easily see it being a gearing issue.

For some reason, I read that he had the LDV gearbox (which I looked into years ago and know that it is geared for a van, ie low ratio for more pulling power) but somehow forgot 20 seconds later when I started typing...ScottieJ wrote:LDV pilot gearbox does have low gear ratios
