a very small air leak blowing "up" into it is ok.. new ones have that. Did u have a lot of oil/gunk in the connecting pipework?

No, the pipes seem very clean, there was a split in one near where it goes on PCV so I trimmed it off and refitted it, would the split cause any problems?

Split wouldn't cause oil consumption. Did u try blocking it off for a week or so?

No not as yet, that will be my next job now you've answered my question about pcv, I guess I can just find a bolt to go in pipe off of valve pipe to block it, and use a j clamp to secure it and same for other end?

Dont know how well u got on... but mine started making smoke again a few days after i replaced the pcv so wasnt that (even tho it was shot)... was for sure the valve stem seals... So i took a chance and put some "Silverhook Stop Leak" into the oil. Its not an oil thickner but a rubber seal treatment.. after about 200 miles of having this in the motor i get absolutley no smoke on startup and she is running sewing machine smooth now! I think it had this stuff in it and when i changed the oil i removed the treatment and hence it leaked again... So now every oil change ill throw a bottle of this in (only a few quid) so well worth it... saved pulling the head and disturbing all the head gasket etc...

Personally I'm not a fan of those types of additives, I would rather just do the valve stem oil seals, better to fix the issue than hide it in my opinion.
