leaf spring to coil spring convertion
leaf spring to coil spring convertion
What are peoples thoughts on going to coil springs from leaf and has anyone done it, if so is it a hard job to do?

Re: leaf spring to coil spring convertion
Well, this is quite a well debated topic but the general consensus seems to be that if you coil your SJ then you'd technically probably need to get it IVA'd in order to be road legal. This isn't something that seems to be worth the hassle to me personally but you might think differently.
To be honest though, it depends why you actually want to go coiled? There are lots of Zuks set up to accommodate a lot of flex which still run leaf spring configs.

Re: leaf spring to coil spring convertion
Very hard job to do properly.
Can be done and kept legal but requires an IVA.
If you looking to get more comfort and flex quite a few of us have gone / are going YJ. Also a few mix and match setups done with Hilux and Navara springs.
All depends what your aiming for?

Re: leaf spring to coil spring convertion
ok thanks just seeing what people thoughts where on it, where just looking at options to be fair, looks like you can still get the height/ground clearance from leaf springs
Re: leaf spring to coil spring convertion
Height and ground clearance.......You don't need one to get the other
Bigger tyres are the only way to gain clearance under the diffs and there are other mods you can do to increase clearance underneath, raising the transfer box and raising the sills etc.
I run YJ springs all round spua on 33" tyres, with a raised Tbox and tucked sills, it stupidly low for an SJ on 33s yet it goes where a lot of taller vehicles do.

ok thanks, going to sounds silly here but as its all new to me, what do you mean by YJ springs?
Re: leaf spring to coil spring convertion
They are leaf springs off a J eep Wrangler YJ, you do need an adapter kit to fit them but they ride well and flex. only issue is you loose a lot of your approach angle if you are on smaller tyres so Running Sj rear springs up front and YJ/hilux springs rear can be a better option on smaller tyres.
