1.6 Vit Engine in Sammie. What Radiator?

Post by Beardy89 » Wed Jan 20, 2016 3:51 pm

Hi Guys,

Ive got a Sammie, with a 1.6 Vitara Engine Conversion.
The radiator that was fitted was leaking badly, and also the engine seems to get pretty hot.

is there a common Radiator upgrade that goes with fitting a 1.6 into a Sammie?

I usually fit the vitara rad that matches the engine, I know of people that have ran the 1.3 rad but I personally don't think it's up to the job.

As Scottie says.

I ran with the standard 1.3 rad, its was ok when moving quick but not up to the job for off roading and slow moving. Swapped to a Vit rad and have no issues.

My 1.3 rad doesn't cope well with my 1.3...

My LJ with a 1.6 has to have the smaller SJ radiator and that only barely fits. No issues with it at all.

A few years ago we went out in the summer with 5 SJs of similar spec, 2 of them had 1.3 rads and the others had 1.6 rads.

No prizes for guessing which two we had to wait to cool down a few times.

If I do swap the rad, I'll swap in a 1.6 rad. I think my problem is that I have no cowel over the rad. At speed I have no issues, it's when I'm moving slowly (or stuck in traffic) that I have problems.

I have a 1.6 waiting to go in from Andy so I think a 1.6 rad would be the way to go, with an electric fan conversion.
